Water or coolant

Water (whether it be tap or distilled) boils at a lower temperature than coolant.

Tap water contains all sorts of minerals that causes corrosion in the engine – over time. Most coolants contain compounds that fight corrosion in the radiator and other components it comes in contact with.

At this time you are probably thinking that coolant is the way to go.. wrong.

Coolants boiling point is higher than water and it contains anti-corrosive compounds BUT water is a better heat conductor and can remove heat away from the metal more effectively.

Therefore, running 100% coolant isn’t the best thing as it is less effective at taking the heat away from the metal.

Important note: The cooling system is there to ensure that the engine runs at its optimal temperature. The temperature effects the efficiency of the engine. Running too cold or hot isn’t great for an engine, it has to be just right.

So what’s the answer. It is best to use a 50/50 mix of distilled water and coolant. Some will argue about the ratio and you may find that 60/40 or 40/60 is better for you but 50/50 is a good start.

Evans waterless coolant

There is another option, Evans waterless coolant. Jay Leno uses it apparently... then again, he can afford to.

Most people do not go down this route as it is expensive stuff.

I would only use it once my cooling system has been given a good going over.

Once you fill your car with this stuff you shouldn't need to replace it.

Interesting.
